Advantages of Teaching With the Digital Microscope

Technology has been extensively used in the field of scientific study and much turn over has been on for implementing it in the schooling system. The consulation sighted in this regard is that introducing new technology at an early age would help students good understand the distinct aspect of subjects such as biology, chemistry, earth science and environmental science. Introduction of technology such as the digital microscope is now seen as an integral part of teaching rather than an add-on to the instructional methods already in place. As stated by Kara Dawson,"We refer to our technology integration as a lasting evolution because each semester more faculty members are incorporating technology in their courses and more faculty members are experimenting with new forms of technology integration." (Dawson, K. (2004). Illustrations of technology integration in the Unified Elementary Proteach program. Contemporary Issues in Technology and teacher Education, 4(1), 64-72).

Use of the computer microscope such as the SmartScope has changed the way both teachers and students view seemingly difficult subjects such as science. Educators especially see the digital microscope as a potent, hands-on tool for the students to deal with with minimal supervision. Introducing such a technology at an early age also ensures that students who desire to take up teaching as a profession in future also learn the advantages of using such instruments while teaching. The digital microscope allows a more inclusive and interactive classroom technology rather than the teacher getting entangled in teaching how to operate an instrument. The intuitive make ensures that even students from elementary school are able to operate with ease.

Led Microscope Light

Different aspects being taught in the subjects such as biology can be really conveyed using a practical approach with the digital microscope. For instance, students can be instructed to make a continuous video or a time lapse video to learn distinct stages of plant growth. For this purpose they can plant a seed and keep it under consideration using the video highlight of the digital microscope. Once the germination duration is over, they can wait till the first leaves start appearing and again take a video till the leaves come out completely. These two videos can then be viewed together, showing stages of plant growth in one continuous stream.

The digital microscope is a beneficial educational tool, enabling the teachers to show the finer details of the object under study. For instance, while teaching cell structure, students can really view a cell straight through the digital microscope. The instrument offers high resolution imaging of up to 1280 to 1024 and magnification ranging from 10x to 200x. Apart from this, there are 6 Led lights enable clear view of the cell being studied. The image taken straight through the digital microscope can be really viewed on a computer monitor or projected on a screen, allowing the entire class to view and discuss distinct parts of the cell.

Implementation of technology in the field of schooling has given the teachers an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills. They can now integrate on teaching the finer aspects of the object under investigation. This also allows them to be more interactive with the class, enabling in-depth consulation of the subject.

Types of aggregate optical Microscopes

Compound visual microscopes are also known as mixture microscopes, light microscopes or visual microscopes and come in several varieties. These include digital, inverted, stereo, monocular and binocular.

All work on the same principles and deliver an enlarged image to the viewer. They have some differences though, which will be detailed here.

Microscope

Monocular:

These are probably the ones you think of when microscopes come to mind. Using a single light as a sample illuminator and mixture lenses for magnification, these have a single eyepiece. This is a bit uncomfortable, as you need to close one eye to get a clear image of what you are finding at on the slide. The eyepiece has a power of about 10X and the objectives or lenses on the nosepiece range from 2X to 50X depending on your single microscope. The big one here is the single eyepiece.

Binocular:

Binocular microscopes are becoming more common. You can tell a binocular style microscope by the dual eyepiece. Naturally put, you use both eyes to view the sample image. This makes them more comfortable to use and thereby more popular. Dual eyepiece scopes are used widely in high school and college classrooms. Binocular microscopes have all the same characteristics as the monocular ones above.

Stereo:

Stereo microscopes bring a whole new size to the image, literally. Whereas the typical light microscope produces a two-dimensional image, the stereo microscope uses two light sources working independently to furnish a three-dimensional image to the viewer. The sample on the slide will have height, depth and width. Using all of the same features and characteristics of the other visual microscopes, stereomicroscopes stand out among their counterparts.

Digital:

This is where things go differently in the realms of microscopy. Appropriate visual microscopes use light to illuminate and lenses to magnify something that you could not see with the unaided eye.

Digital microscopes are a breed apart. This type of microscope inverts the light source, placing it above the sample. Appropriate visual microscopes place the light below the sample. You also get the 3D image like in stereo scopes. The discrepancy is that the image is digitized and transmitted to a monitor or screen for viewing. Fantasize watching cells divide on a 19" monitor. The user can take still photos or involving video of the sample in real time. I think you can see the advantages here.

Inverted:

Inverted microscopes are used to study samples that are gravity sensitive, like gases suspended in a liquid. The inversion refers to the light source, which is typically below the sample slide. With the inverted microscope, the light source is above the sample slide. This paved the way for new innovations in digital imaging that came along.

All these dissimilar types will work for you. It's just a matter of what you want to accomplish or study. I can tell you this, though; using any microscope will open your eyes to a whole new perspective of where we came from and what we are made of.

Specialty Light Bulbs

After the first humble incandescent light bulb was invented, there has been no finding back. Rapid improvement has seen the output of a wide range of light bulbs that are both functional and ornamental. Generally, people are customary with light bulbs used for lighting up homes and offices. At times extra bulbs are seen lighting up big areas on extra occasions. These bulbs supply only a peek into the vast specialized field of specialty light bulbs.

There is, in fact, a detach field of lighting known as specialty lighting. Specialty light applications comprise lights for greenhouses, reef aquariums, and industrial fixtures, along with floodlights and exit signs.

Led Microscope Light

A few other categories of specialty light bulbs used for normal lighting are colored light bulbs, covenant fluorescents, ornamental bulbs, European lamps, fluorescent bulbs, Hid lamps, and halogen lamps.

There is a section of specialty lamps that are used for visible arts. These are scanner lamps, camera lamps, and plate burner lamps. Medical and other scientific fields also use several specialty bulbs. These are microscope lamps, visual lamps, diagnostic lamps, surgical lamps, dental lamps, germicidal lamps, and infra red lamps. Other lamps like aircraft lamps, sealed beams lamps, scenery lamps, low voltage lamps, metal halide lamps, projector lamps, and sign lamps also use specialty bulbs.

Photographic bulbs and railway light bulbs are also specialty bulbs used exclusively in two highly different areas. Automotive Led bulbs are ordinarily used specialty bulbs. These bulbs last for a quite a while and are a good buy.

Projector light bulbs are used to illuminate projectors that are used for personal or business use. Tanning light bulbs function in a manner similar to full spectrum light bulbs, and supply a high intensity light. Tanning bulbs in general emit ultraviolet A and B light that helps tan the skin. These bulbs are used by tanning salons to cater to buyer needs.

There are assorted types of bulbs available to suit any conceivable lighting need. One just needs to go out and gawk the shop to find inspiring options.

common Causes For Residential building Failures

A/Overview

This document has been written to give clients of property safe an understanding of the most tasteless types of construction defects that can be found in buildings whilst doing an As 4349.1 inspection. This list gives the reader a basic form of the more tasteless defects and the reader should be aware that there are for real thousands of forms of construction defects. The items which we have listed are the more tasteless ones only.

Led Microscope Light

B/Abstract

The report lists some of the more tasteless residential construction failures together with the causes based on the case studies carried out by the writer as a licensed Builder. The writer has also included some of the causes of the failures.

Purpose
The purpose of this report is to give the reader a summary of the types of residential construction failures and the suggested remedies to these defects.

Method
This report is presented as a case study based on the experience and personal records of the author over the last 15 years as a licensed Builder.

Findings
A large proportion of structural construction failures listed in this report have in my plan been caused by the mismanagement of stormwater around houses prominent to movement in the homes. The remainder of the failures are caused by poor construction practices and or poor maintenance.

C/Introduction

The most tasteless forms of construction failure noted during As 4349.1 house inspections by the writer in Adelaide are as follows.

Slab Edge wetting
This is the horizontal ingress of moisture and salts in explication from the soil which enter into footing edges through the capillary operation (Suction caused by the concrete) of the concrete. It is caused by a whole of factors including, Concretors pushing down the Fortecon membrane with edge forms prior to pouring a floor slab, relatively poor cement concrete in the footing (Many engineers have called for 32 Mpa concrete to resist the ingress of salts in lieu of 20 to 25 Mpa currently used), Concrete over pours caused when concretors edge forms are not settled low enough to stop a horizontal over pour which can lead to water ponding on the top face of the over pour creating a pool of water. The final cause is the lack of a plastic membrane to be settled between the paving and the footing edge.

The damage that can be caused though this question includes, mould and rotting to the underside of floor coverings internally and the fretting of the concrete through the salt attacking the cement matrix through a hydraulic operation both internally and externally. (Salt crystals enlarge inside the concrete matrix thereby causing it to fret and crack).

Rising Damp in walls
This is a similar question to Salt damp detailed below. The main incompatibility is that Salt damp is commonly a 90 to 100% break down of the Damp policy in the wall whilst rising dampness is a partial failure of the Damp policy and the partial failure commonly means that the damage to the masonry wall is not as bad as Salt damp. There is a good occasion that rising dampness may be found in most pre 1950 homes and the Rising dampness could be itsybitsy to erosion of the mortar joints by as itsybitsy as 1 to 2 mm from its original face. The medicine is the same is Salt damp.

The client should be aware any way that in most cases the rising dampness is not treated as the erosion of the masonry is very slow and it may have taken 50 years for the mortar to erode 4mm deep from the face of the brickwork. I would propose clients to monitor this if the damage is not major.

Salt Damp in Walls
This is caused through the vertical ingress of moisture and salts into a wall which can lead to the wall fretting and not being able to take structural loads. The damage caused to the masonry is from the salt crystals inside the masonry increasing prominent to the bricks and or mortar fretting. In some cases the salt damp can render the masonry unstable.

It is caused by a whole of factors together with the full breakdown of the damp policy (Pre 1910 homes had pitch or bitumen between the footing and bricks and this becomes brittle with age), paving and or render bridging the damp policy also causes this.

Breacher piece failures in showers This is where the breacher piece fails through metal fatigue via thousands of heat cycles inside the wall (This is where the hot and cold water meet inside the wall in the shower). Water then flows into the walls. commonly a breacher piece will fail in a shower every 25 to 30 years or so and it is quite common. A tell tale sign of a breacher which has been substituted is two off dissimilar tiles to the walls of the shower.

During inspections carried out by property safe the business carries out a gawk of the wet area walls in its excellent report using an electronic moisture meter to identify this defect. High moisture levels to the walls next to the shower commonly indicate that it is leaking.

Brick increase
Cracks in walls Older homes can have brick increase cracks which usually occur at the end of a wall in a vertical plane. Clay bricks will for real enlarge as they are porous. If a house does not have operate joints in the wall the bricks can exert a compression load on one other prominent to cracking.

Terracotta roof tiles
Fired clay roof tiles will fret when exposed to moisture for long periods of time and this commonly occurs at the laps of the tiles. The tiles can also fret in seaside environments due to salt attacking the tiles. It is not uncommon to see these roof tiles fretting to the laps on the underside of the roof tiles. As these tiles age they can also become very brittle and are for real cracked.

In most instances when the tiles are fretting they will need replacing within the short term. Concrete cancer in footings and precast concrete lintels. This occurs when the steel bars inside the concrete rust due to moisture/salt/Carbonation ingress into the concrete. As the bars rust they enlarge causing the concrete to crack. This can cause cracking in the surrounding concrete elements. The client should be aware that it is very expensive to heal this defect.

Tree damage
Although some tree roots can cause hydraulic damage from the roots physically appealing the construction element, most construction failures are caused by the tree withdrawing moisture from the soil. This then leads to the soil contracting which can cause construction elements to drop or move.

In a large whole of inspections over the years the writer has observed walls and footings dropping or appealing due to soil contraction when a tree is too close to the base of a wall. In most instances the writer would propose clients to keep large trees well away from the house. If this is not inherent an impermeable root fabric can be used to stop the tree roots growing under a house.

Stormwater damage and Soil movement
This is caused when gutters, stormwater pipes and downpipes overflow/leak causing the soil around and under the footing to be saturated. Once the soil becomes saturated it then loses its potential to take load and the soil can collapse prominent to the construction element dropping or moving. In some instances reactive soils can enlarge also prominent to cracking. This then places uplifting loads on a house which can lead to needful cracking and movement as well.

In Adelaide reactive (fine soils such as clays) can be found at the base of the foothills where fine silts run off the hills. The fine reactive soils can commonly be found in Rostrevor, Athelstone and Campbelltown.

Lack of Paving around the external perimeter. This can cause expansion and contraction in the soil around the footing prominent to movement in the Building. Ie Expansion in soil after heavy rains and contraction in the soil in the summer. In some instances the contraction of the soil under the footing (on the external portion) can lead to the footing rotating on the external side as it drops. The author has seen many instances of this occurring and this leads to the whole wall leaning out or in. (Bows out at the base and then leans in at the top). In these instances the wall commonly needs to be pulled down and rebuilt.

In many of the property safe reports you may see a note detailing seal gaps at the footing paving junction. Many houses inspected by this business have gaps at this junction and this can allow moisture to enter both under the house and also under the paving. Where the water enters under both elements it can erode the soil away and or cause the soil to whether enlarge or contract. In this instance the gap should be sealed off with a flexible sealant.

Older style wiring.
The author has seen electrical failures from the following during inspections over the years., -Canvas coated and vulcanised rubber power cables. In the first instance the canvas can be eaten by rodents or just physically ages prominent to the cables being exposed which can result in fires. The same can happen with older rubber cables which can split.

-Power cables not in conduit in experience with steel frames. I.e. If the cables are damaged the frame becomes live. A whole of houses over the years have been inspected by property safe and found to have new wiring in all areas of the house but not inside the existing hard plaster. during the excellent house inspections this business uses a high powered torch to identify wall patches and chases to the walls. An existing house without wall chases above the light switches and power points would commonly indicate that the original wiring has not been removed. In this instance property safe would propose the client to engage an electrician to carry out a gawk of the house to confirm if the wiring is original to these areas. Hard plaster cannot be removed during a house inspection as the vendor would not commonly approve this.

Leaking pipes in wet areas This is commonly caused through corrosion of lead or galvanised steel waste pipes under or in floor slabs. As the pipes corrode this leads to a leak which can wash away sub fill in a floor prominent to the floor and or footing dropping.

This is very expensive to heal as commonly the pipes are cast into the floor slabs in the wet areas and they need to be jack hammered up. This is a tasteless flaw as a large whole of houses in pre 1970 properties have galvanised steel pipes cast into the floor slabs. For these steel pipes it is not a matter of if but when the pipes need to be substituted . Having stated this steel pipes although not draining as well as they should do can function for many years until funds can be found to replace them.

If you have steel waste and or water contribute pipes in a pre 1970 house and you are contemplating a wet area reparation with new tiles etc we would strongly propose you to remove the steel pipes prior to the renovation.ie If you renovate the wet areas without removing the steel pipes a failure of the pipes could result in you having to re renovate the wet area at great cost again!

Cracks/Movement in walls
Movement in any home is hard to control. In most instances cracks are caused by changes in soil moisture levels around the footing although trees can also cause needful movement. Horizontal cracks can occur in walls if a window lintel sags or if a footing/wall drops.

Diagonal cracks radiating away from window and or door heads are the most tasteless form of cracks. Lateral movement cracks can occur with a shear load if a footing rotates (Drops) on one side. Due to Adelaide's dry climate soil shrinkage connected cracking in homes is causing many problems. This leads to footing community (Dropping of the footing) and cracks in all construction elements.

Roof frame failures
The first type of failure is for an older style roof which does not have under purlins and or struts. In this instance the failure is commonly from the frame not being able to take the dead loads from the weight of roof tiles. It is tasteless to see the frame sag heavily and split and this instance repairs may need to be carried out. If a roof frame is sagging from the weight of the roof tiles and the timber frame is not splitting or showing any signs of stress our advice to you is to closely monitor the roof frame.

In the second instance the writer has seen heavy splitting to timber around defective gang nail trusses man-made in the 1970's. In some instances the trusses could not take roof loads and sagged.

White ant charge
Property safe does not carry out a gawk for white ants in our inspections and we would propose that you engage a pest controller to do this. White ant charge is a very tasteless question in buildings with the ants for real eating any form of timber in a home. As the timber wall frame is load bearing in a brick veneer home this can led to structural failures. The ants will usually enter a home where voids are close to the ground. One example of an entry point is where the paving bridges the Damp policy allowing ants to enter a wall cavity through weep holes (i.e. The paving is poured above the Damp policy in the wall).

A second example is where orchad beds are settled up against walls without any paving and in this instance we would propose on removing the orchad bed and then installing paving all around the house.

Poor Workmanship
The following defects are caused by poor workmanship which does not comply with the construction Code. -Render in brick wall weep holes This stops condensation from draining out of a cavity. The writer has seen fretting render caused by blocked weep holes. -Bricks overhanging the footing. Bca allows a tolerance but in many instances concreters' set out the slab incorrectly. As the wall is not supported the bricks can bow out.

-Render bridging wall Damp Courses In many instances plasterers do not charge a horizontal line through render which can result in ground moisture and salts rising up into the wall by passing the Damp Course. This can cause Salt damp in a wall.

-Concrete slabs poured up against brickwork. In some instances around porch slabs builders sometimes place the Damp policy one brick policy above the footing and pour the porch slab up against the first policy of clay bricks. In this situation clay bricks are not designed to be exposed to ground moisture and salts for extended periods of time and this leads to fretting of the bricks.

This is sometimes seen in older houses and it is hard to fix this if the fretting of the walls is heavy. Branch to a site visit sometimes the best selection in this instance is to jackhammer up the floor slab and then repour the concrete below the Damp Course. At the end of the day this is an expensive question to rectify. The writer has seen this in many garages in pre 1980 houses.

-Puddle flanges to wet areas not installed correctly. Puddle flanges are designed to drain any water caught between the waterproof membrane and the floor tiles. In some instances the flanges are laid proud of the floor and the trapped water cannot drain into the waste pipe. In a second floor construction this ponding water can bypass the membrane prominent to the timber floor swelling and door, wall and window frames jamming up from compression loads. If this has occurred it is very expensive to repair.

-Waterproof membranes to showers This is probably the largest of the observed failures mentioned in this report in my opinion. If a shower leaks this can cause heavy damage to the timber wall frame via wood rot and water damage. In masonry wall long term moisture leaks into the surrounding walls can lead to fretting of the masonry brick walls and render. In a metal wall frame heavy rusting can occur.

In a timber wall frame long term leaks into the shower walls can also cause swelling of the wall cladding and wall tiles debonding and cracking. In a masonry wall the high moisture levels can lead to the tiles cracking and or debonding off the walls.

The Bca (Building Code) requires silicone to the internal wall corners of a shower and many tilers still grout these areas which leads to cracking as the grout is rigid. The Bca also requires an angle to be installed at the wall floor junction in the shower and in many instances this is not installed.

Many waterproof membranes are not installed correctly or the wrong materials are used.ie Bitumen membranes to showers which leach into the grout, liquid membranes not reinforced with polypropylene gauze fabrics. Etc.

Asbestos
Most homes built before 1988 would have some cement asbestos based cladding in the house. property safe can carry out a gawk to identify this based on our plan only in our excellent report. This can only be verified by analysing samples under a microscope in a laboratory so any gawk is based on our plan only and would need to be confirmed by the Lab. Our excellent report does not analyse the samples in a Laboratory.

If this material is disturbed by grinding, drilling or cutting it can be fatal. Areas where it can be found in a house include.

-Backing sheet for the power board -Old floor coverings -Eaves cladding externally. -Wet area cladding Etc.

D/Discussion

In terms of the remedies to the failures identified above these are as follows.

Slab edge wetting
This can quite for real be solved by stopping the replacement of moisture horizontally into the slab by placing an impervious membrane between the paving and the footing or directly onto the full depth of the footing. Plastic, waterproof membranes (Liquid or sheet) are the best remedies.

Salt damp
This can be repaired by forming a new Damp policy by undersetting (removing bricks and inserting a new plastic membrane) or chemical injection (Silane siloxane injection) where the Damp policy has failed. Where the paving bridges the damp policy the paving should be lowered. If render bridges the Damp policy the render can be removed.

Breacher piece failures
In this instance commonly four off wall tiles, the affected render and the original fitting are removed. The reverse is then carried out with new materials.

Brick increase cracks
This form of cracking can be stopped by forming operate joints in the wall above the windows and doors to allow the bricks to enlarge from long term moisture absorption.

Terracotta roof tiles
Generally if these tiles are fretting at the laps they should be removed and then substituted with new concrete roof tiles or metal roof cladding.

Concrete Cancer
The only way that this can be repaired is by physically removing the affected concrete fully exposing 360 Degrees of the bar, placing saw cuts , grit blasting steel, prime steel with zinc cold galvanising, prime and then replace concrete with a polymer modified shrinkage compensated heal mortar. In order to stop contaminants (Chloride ions and carbon dioxide) entering the concrete, a coating (Acrylics) should be applied to stop water and contaminant ingress. This is applied after the heal is carried out.

Trees
Once minor damage to homes has been caused commonly it is not viable from a financial perspective to carry out major repairs. In some instances this may happen but this is rare. If a wall has dropped from soil shrinkage the most tasteless rectification is to under pin the footing. This involves excavating under the existing footing, propping, pouring a new footing and then grouting between the new and existing footings. Under pinning is very expensive.

If trees cannot be removed a trench approx 2m deep can be dug between the house and the tree and then lined with an impermeable root fabric to stop the tree roots growing under the house.

Stormwater damage
If the gutters and downpipes are leaking they should be repaired and or replaced. In most instances these elements do not drain out to the street. If this is the case the stormwater should be diverted out to the road via stormwater pipes.

Lack of Paving.
The needful elements to operate cracking in older homes is to keep the soil around the footing in a carport moisture range. This can be achieved by installing paving .It is prominent any way to water gardens consistently during summer for a fixed period and intervals in areas adjacent to the paving. This keeps the soil moist adjacent to the paving (Best to use an electronic watering system).

Older style wiring In order to stop the occasion of an electrical fire, older wiring should be removed and substituted with new Pvc wiring together with the premise of earth leakage circuit breakers.

Leaking pipes
In order to check if existing pipes are corroding a plumber can pressure test the pipes or use a Cctv system. commonly any older steel or lead pipes should be removed and substituted with Pvc any way this can be expensive as concrete floors need to be jack hammered to entrance the pipes.

Cracks in walls
Generally the best way to operate movement is to allege a house. This allows it to move by installing wall operate joints above windows and doors and slip joints between the hard plaster and the brickwork. To form a slip joint remove render, setup mesh onto bricks and replaster with a lime rich mortar. A lime rich mortar is used to cut the cement article and hence the rigidity of the render with a 1 cement, 10 sand and 2 parts lime mortar).

In relation to soil shrinkage cracks a whole of soil engineers in Adelaide have instigated the direct injection of water into the soil around the footings to the external perimeter of homes (Mainly to Parkside). This keeps the soil in a carport moisture range via the computer controlled injection of water into the soil.

Roof Frame failures
In most instances roof frame failures are easy to rectify by propping the sagged or damaged area and whether lapping the member whether side with new timber or inserting additional props (The props commonly run from the under purlin to the internal wall). In the case of gang nail failures lapped timber bolted whether side of the affected timber can also solve this defect.

White ant failures.
Ants can be prevented from entering a house via chemical sprays , Ant caps (Stumped homes) or stainless steel mesh barriers (Termimesh). If existing homes are infested, the homes can be sprayed with chemicals or have bait stations inserted settled around the external perimeter of the home which are for real baited with poisoned timbers (Sentricon system).

Property safe does not carry out a gawk for white ants in our pre purchase inspections and we would propose that you engage a pest controller to do this.

Poor workmanship In each instance the work should be carried out as per the requirements in the Bca ie.

-Weep holes during rendering cut the render out of the weepholes
-Bricks Overhang footing Set out floor slab correctly.
-Render bridges damp policy Cut a horizontal line in the render over the Dpc
-Concrete slab poured up against bricks Ensure that the i.e. Porch slab is poured up against the edge of the main footing.
-Puddle flanges Ensure that the flange is flush with the top of the floor. The timber/concrete needs to be rebated down to allow the flange to sit flush with the floor.
-Membrane to showers Ensure that the membrane is installed in accordance with the Bca.

E/Conclusions
The bulk of the causes of construction failures as detailed in this cast study are due to changes in the moisture conditions in the soil around the footings due to seasonal change. The remedies discussed revolve around holding the soil in a constant moisture state. The measures discussed comprise installing paving and electronic orchad watering systems, diverting stormwater away from the house, ensuring plumbing does not leak, holding tree roots away from footings and articulating older homes to enable them to move.

Of the remaining failures many are due to poor maintenance and or construction techniques. Ie Damp Courses bridging paving (Non Bca compliant) can cause white ant infestations and or Salt damp.

Parts and Functions of a Light Microscope (Part Ii)

A primitive microscope was invented in 1590 in Middelburg, Netherlands, by the eyeglass makers Hans Lippershey, Zacharias Jansen and his father Hans Jansen. Further, Galileo Galilei improved the instrument by using a set of aligned lenses and called it "occhiolino", what means "little eye". In 1625, Giovanni Faber named Galileo Galilei's "occhiolino" as a compound microscope and this name remains until today.

The visual microscope, the most coarse type of microscope, contains several parts with specific functions. survey the photograph and find their functions.

Microscope

1. Eyepiece: contains the ocular lens, which provides a magnification power of 10x to 15x, usually. This is where you look through.

2. Nosepiece: holds the objective lenses and can be rotated legitimately to turn magnification.

3. Objective lenses: usually, there are three or four objective lenses on a microscope, consisting of 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x magnification powers. In order to derive the total magnification of an image, you need to multiply the eyepiece lens power by the objective lens power. So, if you incorporate a 10x eyepiece lens with a 40x objective lens, the total magnification is of 10 x 40 = 400 times.

4. Stage clips: hold the slide in place.

5. Stage: it is a flat platform that supports the slide being analyzed.

6. Diaphragm: it controls the intensity and size of the cone light projected on the specimen. As a rule of thumb, the more transparent the specimen, less light is required.

7. Light source: it projects light upwards straight through the diaphragm, slide and lenses.

8. Base: supports the microscope.

9. Condenser lens: it helps to focus the light onto the sample analyzed. They are particularly helpful when coupled with the highest objective lens.

10. Arm: supports the microscope when carried.

11. coarse adjustment knob: when the knob is turned, the stage moves up or down, in order to coarse adjust the focus.

12. Fine adjustment knob: used fine adjust the focus.

Polarizing Microscope and Applications

A polarizing microscope is a special kind of microscope that utilizes two polarizing lens to collect unavoidable visual data from the specimen. The polarizing microscope is used extensively in the field of visual mineralogy which supports such applications as geology, asbestos testing, and forensic science. Often those working in dissimilar fields will sometimes refer to the polarizing microscope by dissimilar names such as geology microscope, petrographic microscope, pol microscope, and Plm (polarized light microscope.)

The key variation between the polarizing microscope and a accepted aggregate microscope is the expanding of a fixed polarizer between the light source and the specimen and the expanding of an adjustable polarizer between the objective and the eyepieces. The 2nd polarizer is called the "analyzer" and normally can insert in and out on a rotating piece in the neck of the microscope. Other tasteless accessories comprise a rotating stage and insertable retardation plates made from gypsum or quartz.

Microscope

With these added elements, the this microscope can collect visual data from a specimen that no other microscope can. The key visual information ready includes refractive index, birefringence, sign of elongation, pleochroism, and angle of extinction, all of which provide clues to the crystallography of the material that is being investigated.

The first uses of these kinds of microscopes over one hundred years ago was the identification of minerals in geology. In addition, the most tasteless form of lab diagnosis to test for asbestos is performed with a polarizing microscope. Because of the their quality to provide visual data, these kind of microscopes are very ordinarily used in forensic science where the identification of unknown materials is a disposition part of the job. Some of the first evidence disputing the claimed age of the so-called "Shroud of Turin" was considered by diagnosis of pigments using a polarized light microscope.

The polarizing microscope is a very versatile and marvelous instrument in the identification of materials. It is a key tool in several scientific fields, and can sometimes be the best option over more costly technologies. For example, in disposition asbestos diagnosis the polarizing microscope was considered to be more correct and much more cost efficient than the other high-tech options that were first investigated, such as x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. It is a marvelous tool with many applications.

Nikon's MicroscopyU has quite a bit of information on how the polarizers and the science work to provide analytical information: http://www.microscopyu.com/articles/polarized/polarizedintro.html

How Each of the Microscope Parts Functions

Understanding how each of the microscope parts functions is important if you're going to truly understand the microscope. This will make you more of an devotee on the branch and allow you to intelligently rate how well one is working--and whether it needs a replacement part. With that in mind, let's study the branch of the microscope's parts and how they work.

Generations of people nearby the world have made use of the microscope. Straight through the decades and centuries, its basic found has remained much the same. Even though microscopes have changed Straight through the years, from the basic light much microscope all the way to electron microscopes, the parts and functions of a compound microscope are remarkably the same.

Microscope

A microscope will only work correctly as long as each of its private parts is working correctly. When one part ceases working properly, it will likely hinder the effectiveness of the instrument altogether. The main parts of most microscopes are the tube, lenses, illuminator, arm, adjustment knobs, and stage.

You'll find two basic kinds of lenses on the typical microscope. First of the lenses is the eyepiece lens (or the "ocular lens," as it's also called). This ocular lens is found at the microscope's top. This is the part that the microscope user looks through. It's typically not adjustable. The microscope's second lens is known as the objective lens. It's the one that provides most of the instrument's magnification. Indeed, most microscopes don't have one, but some objective lenses. Each objective lens varies in magnification strength.

The microscope's objective lenses are part of a circular part of the scope. It's found between the eyepiece and stage. The user selects the objective lens based on the vigor that he needs and the vigor provided by that objective lens. If the user desires a distinct zoom level, he rotates the circular disc, thus placing a distinct lens above the stage. Connecting the ocular lens and the objective lenses are the part of the microscope called the tube. The user looks Straight through the ocular lens and Straight through the tube, finally seeing out of the bottom, Straight through one of the objective lenses.

The specimen or object to be examined is placed on a part called the stage. Slides are secured to the stage by use of clamps. On these slides will be the specimens to be examined--specimens such as blood or micro-organisms. Immediately below the stage is something such as a mirror or, on a compound light microscope, a light. This mirror or light is called the illuminator, and it's what makes it easier for the user to see the specimen.

Finally, there is a pair of adjustment knobs on most types of microscope. The adjusters are used to sustain in focusing the lenses. The base one is the larger of these two knobs--the one that pulls the lens and stage nearer together. The fine adjuster is the smaller of the adjustment knobs. First, the user adjusts the base knob and then the smaller one to give the tiny adjustments needed to bring the object into clearer focus.

These microscope parts and functions are the same on roughly all microscopes that you'll encounter. There is some small variation, with slightly distinct parts on some (For example, on an electron microscope, there will be electron beams rather than typical illuminators; it thus varies a bit from the parts and functions of the compound microscope). Yet the basic functions and parts are the same. If you learn how each of these microscope parts functions, it will be easier for you to know a good microscope from a bad one.

How to Spot Bad Mole?

How to spot malignant mole?

This morning you took a bath. The warm water feels so nice during the cold winter day. There was some funny skin itching on you back. You looked in the mirror, turned this way , that way. There is small mole on your back You remember this spot had been there for years, since childhood. Did this spot get that strange itching?

Microscope

Recently you have heard the news that there are more than 50000 of new melanoma cases every year. This amount grows 3% a year.

What is going on? Is this small spot on you back went out of control?

Several types of skin tumors exist. Many are slow growers. Many give rare metastasis. Easy dismissal cure majority of skin tumors.

Melanoma brings troubles big time.

Melanos = black, oma = tumor.

You can detect melanoma by self-exam. Skin cancers show themselves much easier than any other types of cancer.

In the same time you can cure melanoma by Easy surgical resection. However, catch this tumor in early stage. Late stage metastasize. Surgeon can not cut off every metastasis in your body.

There are numerous sites dedicated to melanoma self-exam. Just type in the word "melanoma" into any search engine. Result instructions.

Fair skin population have more chances of getting melanoma. However, dark skin population build melanoma too.

Everybody has moles. Women even use moles to charm. How to find if your mole became dangerous?

Dangerous signs comprise Abcd:

Asymmetry

Border

Color

Diameter

A- asymmetry. Suspicious mole does not look like a round or oval blot. Often, early melanoma looks rather like a blot with an odd shape.

B- borders. Borders become irregular, uneven, fuzzy. The edges of the blots become notched.

C- color. Color of general mole should be more or less homogenous. Change in color is very suspicious . There are shades of brown, black, tan, red. Mottled color is suspicious.

D- diameter. Change in diameter is suspicious too. Mole that is bigger than 6 mm is suspicious. Everybody compares 6 mm to a pencil eraser (though few population precisely use it extensively). Just to get idea about the borderline size.

Besides Abcd there could be other signs of perilous mole:

E - enlargement and elevation over the time

Also worrisome signs comprise easy bleeding and erythema (redness) colse to the mole.

Itching and pain in the side of mole make you suspicious as well.

History of melanoma in house should also raise suspicions.

Some skin problems look like melanoma, but are precisely harmless. Anyway, do not gamble with them. Even experienced doctor can not always tell if the lesion is malignant or not. It is great to be safe then sorry and check the troubling changes soon.

Some rare types of melanoma exist. Because even clear melanomas are not always diagnosed on time, the unusual types becomes much more deadlier. Often doctor sees them too late.

Melanoma under the nails. Melanoma of mucous membranes. (Mouth, nose or guts) Amelanotic melanoma - this one is not even colored.

The treatment will be excision with margins and biopsy, but most important of procedure is to catch melanoma Know that the treatment depends on the thickness of the tumor and the proximity of distant metastasis.

Surgeon or dermatologist cuts off the melanoma. Then, Pathologist (doctor specializing in lab diagnostics) looks the sample under microscope.

He classifies the tumor. The grade of the tumor gives the clue to the chances of your survival.

There are some classifications

Breslow classification portion the penetration of the lesion into skin by millimeters. Know that > 0.75 mm is already dangerous, but > 4 mm is wacking.

What is 4 mm. It is nothing. Right? Take a ruler and check how 1 mm looks and how 4 mm looks.

So this is why it is important to catch melanoma early.

There is also Clarks classification that measures penetration of the melanoma into the skin and other layers.

Tnm classification standardizes the grading.

You can not know the grade unless you excise and portion the melanoma penetration under microscope. It is not a do-it-yourself project. Surgeon and pathologist will do it.

The time of evolvement 1-2 years.

The frequency of melanoma is increasing. It might be because of more population get sun damage. Also other reasons may play role.

Treatment of melanoma includes surgical removal, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy.

How I Effectively Removed an Infiltrating Basal Cell Carcinoma With Out surgery

If you, your family or somebody you know has skin cancer or melanomas, this discovery could save their lives.

three years ago in 2005 I was diagnosed with skin cancer, an Infiltrating Basal Cell Carcinoma on the tip of my nose.

Microscope

When I was seventeen I went to the beach with my mates and got badly sunburnt to the point of blistering, and now I have skin cancer.

The scholar told me that It was the type that could grow bigger and work its way up to my brain and kill me.

By this time my emotions were running wild, they raced around all over the place. The blood drained from my face and I wished it were all a bad dream or a nightmare.

It seemed like my whole world was conclusion in around me, then I started to think and ask myself what next? What can be done about it?

Then my next aware recollection was a voice inside of me asking the doctor what can be done about it?

He told me the best surgical operation was Mohs surgical operation where they surgically remove thin shavings of tissue; the specimen is placed  under the microscope and then read by the Mohs surgeon who examines it for cancerous cells. If cancer is found, the surgeon removes the cancerous tissue from the patient. This procedure is repeated until no additional cancer is found. Then a flap of skin is heat sealed over the operated section, loss of blood is minimal.

One day at work, while flicking through a magazine I saw a photo of a man who had lost his nose to skin cancer do not recall if it was the skin cancer that took his nose or if the surgical operation did, all I know is that the vivid photo changed my life.

All of a sudden my mind raced like a madman from one belief to an additional one I saw myself with no nose, and saw habitancy not being able to look at me face to face. Finding the pity on the faces of those I love.

I reached the depths of despair I Knew I Did Not Want To Live Like That.

There had to be an additional one way.

Over 1,600 Australians die from skin cancer each year

Statistics show that more Australians die of skin cancer every year then die on our Australian roads.

There is an estimated 20,000 habitancy who die from skin cancer or melanomas worldwide every year.

A friend introduced me to a special ointment from an old American Indian formula that eats skin cancers and melanomas.

I belief what did I have to lose, if it worked it was a bonus, if not I was already booked in for surgery.

After three weeks the ointment complete its work.

I rang the scholar explained that Id used this special ointment and the skin cancer was gone so the carrying out would not be needed anymore.

He firmly told me that the ointments were not very effective and that I needed to be at the skin cancer clinic at 8.30a.m. Saturday to be examined under the microscope.

He explained that he would do two shavings with a scalpel, then check under the microscope and return.

It seemed as if it was a very long time even though consciously I know it was not, finally he returned.

"I have got good news for you, it is clean and you can go home" I did not need surgery

Since then I have effectively removed 99 skin cancers all without surgery, and many of my friends have also obtained the same results.

Then I decided to write an E-Book entitled "Skin cancer how I effectively removed an Infiltrating Basal Cell Carcinoma without surgery" explaining exactly what I did and also pictures of skin cancers that I removed and step by step with photos exactly the procedure taken.

All the links to where to get the goods and skin cancer pictures on the internet.

What Did Albert Einstein Invent?

Albert Einstein without demand remains a valuable part of history. Throughout the policy of his lifetime, he contributed to several breakthroughs and inventions. Although many are documented, legitimately there are a few missed at some point. In any case, here is a review of some of the inventions noted to Albert Einstein's life.

A Brief History

Led Microscope Light

Albert Einstein continues to exist as one of the greatest physicists ever known. The man of consummate scientific intelligence arrived into this world on March 14, 1879 in Germany. Ultimately, he advanced the world's way of thinking in regards to the corporeal world.

Six weeks following his birth, his house left Württemberg for Munich. This became the location where he started his early academics. His father, Hermann Einstein worked as an engineer and salesperson. When he was five, his father gave him a compass. Many attribute this time in his life as the beginning point for his success as an adult. His father's gift led to an early fascination with trying to eye why the compass all the time pointed north.

Albert Einstein attended the University of Zurich, receiving his doctorate in 1905. This followed a presentation on his theoretical dissertation, which introduced a novel type of calculation for determining the size of molecules. The same year also became his most successful year with production discoveries.

Albert Einstein's Inventions

Most of Einstein's inventions were rather discoveries and theories. Regardless, his accomplishments throughout history are many. In general, most of his contributions were to the four major areas of science. These areas are known as energy, gravity, light, and time.

Brownian Motion

The Brownian petition is among the first of Albert Einstein's contributions. Originally, in 1827 the botanist Robert Brown discovered floating plant spores in petition under a microscope. From this, he postulated that the random movement related to molecules hitting the spores. However, Einstein became the first to offer statistical predictions in reserve of the random distribution and the petition of particles in fluid. Later experiments confirmed his theory.

Special ideas of Relativity

Einstein's extra ideas of Relativity provided one of the first trustworthy explanations on the interaction of radiation and matter when observed concurrently by bystanders thoughprovoking at a consistent speed and the bystanders at standstill. He based this ideas agreeing to the principle of relativity. From this, he derived the precise article of corporeal events within varied inertial frames of reference. This lead to his creating the noted method E=Mc².

Einstein's inventions after 1905

1911 - Why Is the Sky Blue?

Einstein thought about this in 1911 by determining the detailed formulas calculations for light dispersion from molecules. Later this was confirmed by the experiment "Why Is the Sky Blue?"

1916 - normal ideas of Relativity

In 1916, Einstein vast on his extra ideas of relativity. In turn, this resulted in the normal ideas of relativity. By doing this, it allowed for the theories application over uniform and non-uniform systems of motion. Ultimately, the normal ideas is involved with the large-scale affects of gravitation.

Essentially, the ideas determines the equivalence of inertial and gravitational mass. It further allows for a deeper comprehension on a gravitational field forms by curvatures produced in space-time time material bodies, which is further thought about by its curvature. Ultimately, it gives a deeper comprehension into the meaning of gravity.

1921 - Law of Photoelectric effect

He discovered this law through his normal ideas of relativity.

1924 - Bose-Einstein Condensate

The Bose-Einstein Condensate (Bec) has to do with the phase of matter relating to solid gas, liquid, and plasma. This resulted when the 1924 Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose sent a paper to Einstein on the Pank Law from which Einstein generalized the ideas to an ideal gas of selfsame atoms or molecules in which the numbers of particles are conserved. Within the same year, he predicted that at extremely low temperatures the particles would lock together or overlap in the bottom portion state of the system, resulting in the Bose Einstein statistics.

1926 - Einstein Refrigerator

The refrigerator he invented in 1926 worked as an absorption refrigerator and required no thoughprovoking parts or electricity to operate. All it required was heat to work. Therefore, it only needed something such as a small gas burner. His previous pupil jointly helped with his invention of the refrigerator.

Overall, Albert Einstein lived as one of the most acclaimed physicists of our time. Ultimately, he lived as a great thinker, discoverer, and inventor. The above are just a handful of how many theories and inventions he created.

Gemstone Microscope and Its Usage

The function of the microscope is to develop objects so as to make them more legitimately visible to the human eye. Its use in science is unlimited, and to the gemologist the microscope is more foremost than any other instrument. This is because one of the biggest problems in contemporary jewelry is the detection of artificial and imitation stones, and without a microscope the task would be approximately impossible.

The detection of imitation stones covers a vast field and the following lines serve only as an introduction. Three out of four of the most valued gem stones can be produced synthetically in the laboratory. These are the ruby, the sapphire, and the emerald. Needless to say, the difference in value in the middle of a natural and artificial stone is enormous, and it is therefore of many significance to the jeweler that he can be sure they can be effectively powerful from each other.

Microscope

Synthetic rubies made by the flame-fusion process are in all their bodily properties approximately identical with the natural stone. Chemically, both are crystalline aluminum oxide. The red color is in both cases produced by limited quantities of chromic oxide, and if artificial and natural rubies are tested for their definite gravity, refractive index, and absorption spectra, the same results occur in both cases. Yet, if they are placed under a microscope, a marked difference in the middle of the two is found. What then are these internal telltale features that will enable us to distinguish the real from the synthetic?

Fine curved lines are immediately noticeable that are rather like the grooves of a phonograph description and run through the stone. There are also some black spots interspersed irregularly throughout the gem. The curved lines are known as increase lines, and they are produced during the formation of the artificial boule and are a inevitable sign that the stone is synthetic. The black spots rehearse tiny bubbles of gas, and these, too, were included in the boule during its formation. Gas bubbles and curved increase lines are therefore typical characteristics of artificial corundum.

But, what does the inside of natural corundum look like under the microscope? Again, there are the curved increase lines in the artificial stone, but, in the natural one, the increase lines are right and set at definite angles. This latter highlight is an foremost characteristic of most natural mineral crystals. The microscope can provide all-important clues in the identification of rubies and sapphires.

A gem stone that may set an even bigger problem is the emerald. In this case, artificial stones are internally also remarkably similar to the natural ones. Fortunately, Chatham's artificial emeralds do have a lower definite gravity and refractive index than the natural stones, but it is not all the time possible, if a stone is set in a piece of jewelry, to apply these tests. Here the microscope is useful again.

Natural emerald possesses cer¬tain internal features called inclusions. Some of them take the form of spiky cavities filled with tiny mineral crystals and gas bubbles. Indeed, they are so typical that they can be connected with definite mining localities and thus form an foremost guide to the origin of some emeralds. Chatham's artificial emeralds also possess special inclusions, and under the micro¬scope, these look rather like a fine pattern of lace. They legitimately consist of limited interweaving channels filled with liquid and thus are very different in character from the inclusions of the natural emeralds.

A straightforward magnifying glass that enlarges ten times can also be a vital aid in the identification of some gem stones. Thus, a colorless zircon might well be confused with a real diamond, but if both are considered examined with a hand lens by finding through the top of the stone at the rear facets, all things at the back of the zircon will appear double, thus revealing its strong light-splitting property.

Since a solitaire belongs to the cubic crystal system, letting light rays pass through without splitting them, the duplicate image will not be shown by it. This is one straightforward test that immediately distinguishes in the middle of these two gem stones. There is one direction along the so-called optic axis of a double-refractive stone where the light rays are not split and the doubling follow cannot be seen. It is therefore wise to tilt the gem a limited when examining it with a lens to insure that the optic axis does not lie at right angles to the table facet.

obvious Parenting Strengths

Chuck and Priscilla were at their wits' end. They are the parents of two teen-aged girls, and two younger boys. The eldest, Charlotte, is out-of-control. As each child approaches adolescence, they seem to come to be impossible. "We don't know what to do anymore!" Priscilla wails. "I do all things for them. Charlotte and Chuck fight constantly. He expects her to respect him, but she swears at him when he makes the slightest demand. Then he gets mad and starts yelling, and it's all over! She's a top learner and athlete. Why won't she be more compliant at home? And now Gertie, my 13 year-old, is beginning to act out. She talks back something fierce! The boys never do anyone nearby the house. Their grandparents think they are all out of control. I don't know how much more of this I can take!"

Many parents feel inevitable in their skills while their children are little, only to wonder how it all got away from them as their kids reach the pre-teen years. And who are these strangers inhabiting their adolescents' bodies, and what did they do with the off-spring we knew, anyway?

Led Microscope Light

Parenting is not the same as it used to be. Fewer families contain a stay-at-home parent. Economically, most families need both parents to be in the work force. More women are particular parents. The kids who are teens now were in daycare or otherwise looked after by population other than their parents. They don't see us as the arbiters of their lives or as the holders of all the keys, because we no longer are. As well, Tv and computers have made information literally accessible by children - information that, just a few years ago, was the domain of adults. The way we protected children in the past from astounding material such as sexual images, disasters, and pictures of war-torn bodies, was to keep it unavailable. Now that is roughly impossible. Children are traumatized by the news.

They are also feeling weighty pressure to be complicated in activities and interests that their peers and the media tell them they are ready for. Advertising, loosened standards in Tv programs and movies, and the availability of adult content, are all development our children (and many parents, actually) believe that ten-year-olds should be concerned about deodorant, and engage in sexual behaviors.

We are all racing - kids and parents alike. Community runs at a much faster pace. Music, Tv shows, sentence structure and pacing in books, magazines, even symphonies, have sped up drastically. There is an astounding estimate of information bombarding us and demanding that we rejoinder to it instantly. There is more information in one Sunday issue of the New York Times than in all the books that existed in the 16th century. We work longer, vacation less (in the Usa), and are startling to be available by phone, hand-held, and computer 24/7. On top of all this, neighborhoods are not as safe as before. Gangs, drugs, and violence are not restricted to inner cities.

When parents come to me, often they want to sacrifice some unacceptable behavior in their child. Old parenting styles that many of us were raised with, were based on behavior control. They worked gently well then, because children were more dependent on their parents. Today, the same methods often have wildly unsuccessful results, in that they spark dramatic reactions in our children that are often the exact opposite of what we hoped for. When parents now use a domineering tone, lay down the law, and are unaware of their child's point of view, while expecting instant and unquestioning obedience, pre-teens and teens often react with aggression or rejection in terms that we'd never have dared to use. We cannot focus simply on behavior cessation or our own relieve levels. There is nothing more silly and helpless than the feeling you get when you bellow, "You're not going everywhere until you clean your room!" and have the kid shoot you that who-are-you-kidding sneer and stalk out of the house. Parents feel shell-shocked and confused, and the children feel disrespected, misunderstood, and alone.

What we need now are the skills that will help our kids see us as their major support. We need to help them learn to navigate the world as it is today. They need to take risks within a cheap range, learn from their mistakes within the safety of a family that knows the value of trial and error. We need to make sure that our families help young population think about situations, options, and consequences.

It is difficult to give up old patterns and to try new ones. The benefits are legion. As painful as the tumult often is in today's families, we can see it as an opportunity, if we view the chaos from within a inevitable psychology framework. We have the chance to lay a foundation for prolonged relationship and understanding with our young children, to build real and continuing closeness with our adolescents, and in so doing, to work beyond some of the hurts we may still be carrying from our own childhoods, by studying to have more meaningful and warm relationships with our kids. It is so easy, in the face of kids' changing behavior and moodiness, to lose sight of the fact that we have astounding skills. While they treat us as if we are clueless, ridiculous, and offensive, it is imperative that we profess our own reality. The more we can profess our own equanimity and center, the more they will derive these same strengths, to help with the pressures that face them in years to come.

Priscilla and Chuck started by uncovering their assumptions about families, as well as the patterns they inherited from their own upbringings. We looked at the effects of these patterns on the present. Then we discussed what is causing their children to act the way they are. This information included general developmental phases as well as how modern culture and environmental factors have accelerated kids' behavior. (It is not only a relief for parents to have more understanding into their child's reality, it helps immeasurably in staying calm and in being understanding while conflicts, rather than reacting only to the face behavior.)

Once the elements feeding into the tumult were uncovered, Priscilla and Chuck paused to remember why they wanted to have a family in the first place - the spiritual, loving, giving, connected, creative, nourishing reasons for generating and supporting life. Then they identified their signature strengths, as identified by the research in inevitable psychology spear-headed by Chris Peterson and Martin Seligman. We brainstormed parenting applications. Parents feel empowered to rejoinder and apply their Values In activity (Vias, as they are called) such as curiosity, loving, perseverance, genuineness, open-mindedness, kindness, leadership. For example, Priscilla has perseverance/diligence as a strength. We talked about how she could redirect it from doing all the chores and running herself ragged, to setting up job plans and following straight through with consistency. She could apply her power to studying more about child development, new approaches to discipline, as well as putting more emphasis her own well-being within the family.

But the Via signature strengths are not the only characteristics that parents have or need!
After working to upgrade my own parenting skills and helping many families, I
have identified a list of inevitable Parenting Strengths (you could call them Values in Parenting - Vip's) that are explicitly helpful in family life. We have many of the inevitable Parenting Strengths in plenty but don't all the time identify them as valuable. As parents identify these attributes and attend mindfully to addition their use in situations, we feel more assured in our parenting. addition our reliance on these strengths also tends to give us more reliance in our communities and in work lives, as we see them help in all relationships.

The Vips list is meant as an adjunct to the Via list, so I have not replicated the many valuable parenting skills, such as authenticity, curiosity, love of studying in the original. The two can be used together to focus and heighten parents' efforts.

Here, then, is the list I propose as inevitable Parenting Strengths (Pps's). These are skills that help parents of any aged child heighten communication, feel more calm and confident, and profess loving connections. Read straight through the Strengths and identify those which you identify as your top five. Following the list are some exercises you may use to apply your strengths to sticky events in your family.

1) Staying Grounded

You are able to stop, breathe, and join together in with the lower half of your body, especially when you find yourself getting worked up. You settle, turn inward, and feel the energy arresting in your abdomen, pelvis, thighs, knees, calves, ankles, and feet. You feel your energy joining with the energy of the earth, so that you feel connected, rather than like a helium balloon that man forgot to knot after blowing up. You stay internally gift in difficult and emotional situations.

2) Centered

You have a strong sense of your true self, and you feel it as a place in which you reside in yourself. You have a clear feel of the difference in the middle of your personality and your Being. You are good at convention yourself, not being distracted, or pulled into self-judgment. When the going gets tough, rather than reacting by scattering or windup down, you make a point of staying open and self-aware. You know that being centered connects you to spirit and to well-being.

3) Empathic

You are able to see the world though your children's eyes. You see their feelings and reactions as valid, given their feel and level of development. When they have a hard time, you make an endeavor to reflect back to them an understanding of what it must be like for them. You look beyond rude behavior to try to see what is going on inside. If there is a situation that repeatedly drives you crazy, you make sure you take the time to imagine, not only what this situation must be like for them, but what it must mean, given their history. You are able to imagine the scenario as if you are in their body and mind, see what it means to them, and what gets stirred up. You gain understanding that helps you modify future situations. Doing so frees you from feeling upset by their behavior and often leads to their being calmer and more open.

4) Communicator

You identify that good communication is a skill and is not automatic. You think carefully, and in advance, what you want to accomplish in communicating with your children. You plan and convention communication patterns that elicit thoughtful and relatively calm interactions. You are good at orchestrating conversations that enable children to learn life skills. You know that it is much more important to ask questions than it is to supply answers. You help them, by request questions, learn to think straight through situations, anticipate consequences, and reconsider alternatives.

You want them to learn how to work things out for themselves, so you work to operate your emotional reactions to things that they might say, in order to reach the larger goals of open interaction, problem-solving, decision-making, self-confidence, and social skills.

Your strong points are paraphrasing what they've said, so as to make sure you heard correctly, request questions about the topic and about their thoughts, feelings, responses and actions. "How did you feel then?", "What possibilities are there?" "What happened next?" "What do you want to do about it?" "Who could you talk to about that?" are your stock in trade. You love it when your kids surprise you by coming up with solutions that hadn't occurred to you.

5) Connector

You place a high value upon staying emotionally related with your children, even when they act badly or when the two of you are having an argument. You stay present, authentic, and aware of your own feelings, as well as those of your child. You work at seeing ways to profess energetic and emotional ties with your child and stay with it to work things out, rather than giving up. If you need to take a break, you call a time-out, so that every person has a chance to cool off, without anyone feeling rejected or shut out. If they come home in a bad mood, you let them have their chance to cool off, yet you profess the sense inside yourself that you are together and that you love each other.

6) Educator

You remember that the goal of parenthood is to educate over time. You are able to keep in mind that growing up is a process, and that you are engaged in raising wonderful, normal, fallible humans, not robots. You can remember, even in the heat of the moment, that the gift behavior is not as important as the lessons you want your children to learn, such as thoughtfulness, self-reflection, and problem-solving. You tailor your parenting to supplementary the long-term goal and remember that schooling takes years and many steps, and that your children do not have to specialist adult skills instantly, just work toward them gradually.

7) Process expert

You know that the goal is not what is important. The journey is. It is in the process of daily routines that life is lived and savored. You are comfortable with the messiness and incompleteness of the mundane. You keep you eye on what furthers the processes of family life - communicating, being, allowing, working through, tolerating, and the like. You are able to pull back from a situation and notice what is going on in the way that it is unfolding, which you often find more important than the topic. What is important to you is the way things are engaged in, more than the thing itself. You also relax and take time to be with your children while they are going straight through their processes, thereby helping them to be comfortable in the moment.

8) Acceptor

You literally see who your children are - their strengths, weaknesses, the direction they are going - rather than being locked in a view of who you want them to be, or who you can tolerate them being. Much as you would like to raise a concert pianist, you appreciate and sustain your child's talent as a wrestler. You raise the child you have, in the way that they need, even if it is not your first choice. If your child needs firm, clear boundaries delivered in imperative sentences, even if you tend toward the polite and talkative and like to ask for acquiescence, you rally yourself to supply structure in the way he or she needs.

9) holder of Optimism

You hold in your heart, and therefore hold for your child, conviction of their potential, who they truly are, and who they can become. You remember that, if they are adolescent, their brains are changing and they are hormonally challenged. Even in the face of strong evidence to the contrary, you know that they literally are the kind, caring, loving, skillful, arresting population you remember from before. You keep reminding yourself of this, so that you don't think for too long that monsters have taken over their morphing bodies. You gift a photo to them of their best selves. You know that, inside all their posturing, teens are very brittle, sensitive, unsure, confused about what is happening, of the new pressures, and of their own actions. You know that it matters to them, a lot, to see in your eyes the population they hope they are becoming.

10) structure expert

You know that structure makes growth, opportunity, relationships, and achievement possible, that boundaries do not cut population off from each other, so much as they clarify, define, and protect. You are clear about your own boundaries and the areas of life that are impacted by boundary issues. You are clear who you are, and what your lowest line is in different areas. You take care of yourself, have clear limits, balance discrete areas in the way that works best for you and your family. You are able to be flexible, not rigidly adhering to dogma when unforeseen factors indicate the need to take a different approach. You communicate your expectations clearly in a way that each child can hear.

11) Equanimity

You remain contented and peaceful, even when those nearby you are having a hard time.
You take a deep breath and profess the feeling of calm that helps storm-tossed children and teens to orient themselves. You do not cut yourself off from them in order to feel happy. You are gift and available, without being pulled into their angst. You remember that things mostly work out for the best, even if they don't look as if they are going so well at the moment.

12) Autonomy

You see yourself as a unique individual, and you see your children and partner as individuals as well. You know you can stand on your own, and you stand up for yourself. You treat yourself compassionately regarding your shortcomings. You honor your history for the feel and wisdom you have gleaned from it. You have come to terms with pain in your past, so that when it is triggered in the present, you are not thrown into reactive behavior without catching yourself. You know you are responsible for your feel and your behavior. It is fine with you that other population are humans with strengths and weaknesses. You accept them as they are.

13) Sovereignty

You know that, ultimately, each man must depend upon themselves. You know that the best way to train children to be proud is to treat them as individuals with possession to be treated respectfully and with honor, even when they make mistakes and are still learning, even when they screw up royally. As Elizabeth Cady Stanton said in 1892, in front of the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. Congress, "Nothing strengthens the judgment and quickens the conscience like personel responsibility. Nothing adds such dignity to character as the recognition of one's self-sovereignty; the right to an equal place, every where conceded; a place earned by personal merit." You know that teens feel badly enough about themselves, and that their shame escalates very quickly, if they feel reacted to as if they are despicable. You are committed to treating them considerately, honoring their boundaries, and responding to their difficulties in ways that teach deep respect straight through example.

14) Enthusiast

You love the many possibilities there are in life. You love to learn and are interested in many things. straight through your enthusiasm, you turn your children on to the arts, the sciences, bugs, stars, microscopes, cooking, crafts, tap dancing, old movies, badminton, the colors in leaves. You sit on the porch and watch thunderstorms together. You ride your bikes down new roads. You keep having adventures even when they roll their eyes and are too cool to go with you, because you know that later it will be important for them to have seen their parents complicated in activities. And anyway, it's your life that you're enjoying!

15) Fun-lover

You enjoy your children. Just hanging out with them gives you deep satisfaction. You play with them when they are young, introduce them to activities that you value, and join them in play that they find entertaining. As they get older, you are willing to be silly and to offer activities, and also to wait until they are ready to engage with you. You make watching their endless sports events fun for yourself and for parents nearby you.

16) Inspires creativity

You find great satisfaction in expressing yourself creatively. Even if your efforts won't win awards, you paint, dance, draw, play an instrument, try beading, or scrap-booking. You derive leaves and make collages to decorate the table. You enjoy development your home comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. You approach your work creatively, and your kids see you enjoying work because of it. When funds are low, you look for imaginative ways to meet your need. Your children enlarge their feel and their skills by arresting in creative activities with you and on their own.

17) Financially responsible

You live within your means. You do not go into debt unless it is literally necessary. If you do, you use credit wisely, and you have a plan to pay it off as soon as possible. You don't shop as a way of relieving feelings. You educate yourself about financial matters. You find creative ways to keep to your budget, and you save regularly. You help your children produce good saving, spending, and giving habits. You plan for a rainy day.

18) Emotional Savvy

You are literally good at being with your emotions, when they are aroused. You don't hide from pain or discomfort, or self-medicate with food, cigarettes or other substances. (You do, however identify that chocolate is one of the valuable food groups.) You take time to let feelings run their course, when they need attention. You are emotionally responsible. You are able to see when your reactions are about past events, and you make every endeavor not to task them onto gift situations. If you find that you have reacted inappropriately, you justify to others that your mood is not about them, thereby showing your caring and empathic nature. You apologize when you have hurt someone. You know that, if you allow your feelings time to process themselves, and if you reflect on your old ways of seeing at things, painful emotions will abate. You process your feelings, rather than trying to push them away.

You are comfortable with your child's feelings and see their outbursts as opportunities to empathize, educate, and be close. You are comfortable with your child's expressions of feelings and rejoinder respectfully. You understand that children do not have all the social skills yet, and it is okay with you that they still have things to learn when it comes to tolerating and expressing emotion.

19) Partner

You work hard to have a warm, loving, respectful relationship with your co-parent, because that is the tone you want in your life. You know that working on your relationship models social skills for your children, as well as providing them with a loving parental team. You continue developing relational skills, because, as you get older, you see that new issues come up that give you opportunities to continue maturing and expanding. You know that growing does not stop at 20, and that population learn and grow in relationship, not in isolation.

20) Influencer

You know that no one can operate anyone other than themselves. You know that trying to operate your children only leads to disconnection and bad feeling. You know that controlling kids means controlling their behavior only, and that no one can dictate another's feelings or outlook. You remind yourself that, as long as you stay related with your children, you have more influence with them than anyone, even their peers. You deal with your own feelings about their behavior and what they go through, as well as any helplessness or worry that you feel in consequence. You identify that it is a wise man who tolerates her/his feelings. You help your children learn to town in themselves and tolerate their feelings, and to learn to give up on trying to operate other people, events, and their surroundings.

21) Self-Care

You know that you cannot parent effectively if you do not take care of yourself. You model self-respect and self-confidence by paying attentiveness to your own needs and limits. Rather than fly off the handle, you take times-out. You give yourself mini-vacations. You make sure you see friends and engage in activities that replenish you, because all of these activities heighten your parenting and make parenthood enjoyable. You value your own boundaries and calmly set limits in order to ensure that others respect them also. You know the value of having the support of other parents, and even of laughing with them and letting off steam by telling benign stories of teen and toddler pranks, behind your kids' backs, of course.

22) Patience

You stay relaxed inside yourself, while life is messy nearby you. The itsybitsy annoyances do not throw you. You are able to step back and take a larger view of events. You agree with Randy Pausch, the computer science professor dying of pancreatic cancer who gave a "Last Lecture" which has inspired thousands of people, who said that, if population disappoint you, just wait. If you give them enough time, they will bring forth their best selves. If you appreciate them and thank them for the good job you know they will do, they tend to rise to your expectations. As Nelson Mandela said, "It never hurts to think too very of a person. Often they behave better because of it." You can wait while they learn social skills. You profess your cool when things don't go according to plan.

23) inevitable Outlook

And, most of all, you know that being a exquisite parent would not be good for your children anyway. One of your jobs is to teach them to accept and value themselves as they are. You want them to feel inevitable about themselves, even though they mess up sometimes and are not great at everything. You want them to love life, even though life is difficult. You want them to feel inevitable in and about the world, even though the world is both awe-inspiring and terrible at times. You know that there are millions of ways to be a good parent, and so you celebrate your strengths and derive your children to you, to share your blessings and to help each other straight through the tough times. You remind yourself that trials build character. You breathe and laugh and town in yourself, for that is where the joy is - in your relationship with yourself, with those you love, and with the natural world.

Okay, now that you have identified your top five Vip's, your Ppss, here are some exercises to help you apply them as you navigate the rocky waters of family life.

Try this #1: Spend some time thinking about your strengths. notice how you use them and how they help you with your family. Keep them in mind and have reliance in them! See how you can use your strengths to heighten your patience, your empathy, and your optimism. Muse about them and come up with ways for them to help you be more effective, more relaxed, and to enjoy your parenthood more fully.

Try this #2: Remember a arresting occurrence in your home. (That wasn't hard, was it?) Now, pick one of your Pps's that you think might help in that situation. How could you use that power to facilitate a different outcome? (When my preteen daughter started talking back at the drop of a hat, I found some time to myself and used my power of empathy to imagine what our interchanges must be like from her perspective, given her experiences in life. A light bulb went on as I suddenly saw how literally deep feelings of loss seemed to be triggered for her. After that, I worked to remember how important our closeness was to her and to see her apparent outrage, not as insolence, but as a sign that she felt too shut out by the way I may have said something. I became more able to remain calm and loving in tone (not a skill under stress that I'd experienced with my parents!) which often led to her softening and continuing to interact with me.

Try this #3: You could also pick one Pps with which you would like to come to be more proficient, and grow it into a strength. To do so, focus on the strengths you already have. research into inevitable psychology has shown definitively that the more you enlarge your use of your inevitable strengths, the more the ones you could use some work on heighten - much more so than if you just wrestle to try to counter your "failings."

The more you bring your awareness to focus on your strengths, the more they will grow. notice how you feel as you play with these exercises. notice what great ideas you come up with, use them with your children and see how they respond.
